My first meeting with Paolo and Vittorio was an enchanting experience. I felt honoured that they wanted to see me about a project. It was really love at first sight because both are so charming, hilariously funny, bursting with passion and also because they are real Mediterraneans. I’m also a real Mediterranean, so we get on great. It was really love at first sight and it’s an honour to be able to work on this film.
Monique is a cheerful Armenian teenager brought up in a well-off family without a worry in the world, but then her happy, youthful life is brought to an abrupt end by a war, which, like every war, is ridiculous. She sees the beautiful and amazing world around her change; she assists in its suffering and dies with it.
Roughly speaking, it’s a love story and love transcends all generations and periods. It is also a war film, where battles between enemies are a daily occurrence. It’s a story about an impossible love between two people and two countries – if you want, you could sum it up as a love affair between two people, but it’s really about two countries, two cultures that cannot live together.
