Juan Alexander (productor) "I am very fond of this film because it cost me a lot to create. I found funding in countries like the UK and Italy – and that surprised me considerably. I thought it was more logical to get funding from the French, not least because Carmen is based on a story by a French novelist. Or perhaps from the Germans, because they like costume dramas. But as I just said, it was the English and the Italians who were the most interested in this project. MAS also helped fund the film and we were able to create a very special set design and atmosphere for it... The film was made in « natural » locaions ; we set up studiosin every city where we shot the external scenes. For example, we spent ten days in Ronda. We were so scared that it would rain during our external shots that we felt we could not waste time and hired a boat where we built a part of the set."
