Vicente Aranda (director and screenwriter) "I changed the screenplay and adapted it to fit in with the schedule of this film: that is something I’ve always wanted to do. These changes were result of conversations I had with the actors during which we tried to explain all the characteristics of the protagonists as well as those of their ancestors. We never really got that far but we did establish a Freudian scheme by using the character of Micaela opposite Carmen. The character of Macaela does not exist either in Merimée’s novel or in the opera, but we set this character against Carmen. Micaela represents all the virtues of an ordinary woman. while Carmen represents the adventurer, the “femme fatale”, a terribly cruel woman who is also vital to the point of being over the top. Carmen is all this - and more besides."
